About Me

Hello! I’m Melanie

Inspiration Behind “Encouragement to Shine your Light”

You are a lighthouse.

Your only job is to shine your light.

Your job is not to go and rescue the ships at sea, even if they are rowing out into a storm.

Often your light may begin to grow dim or even go out & the soil begins to erode beneath you.

My job is to reflect your light back to you in order to help you weather the storm that surrounds you until you are able to shine your light again.

Once your light begins to shine others will be drawn to it and you will have more to give to yourself and others.

My Approach & Values

Integrative Counseling

I seek to integrate counseling with the Bio-pyscho-social model of psychology, which is an organizational framework for understanding the numerous causes of mental disorders. Integrative treatment addresses the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and environmental influences that affect wellness.

Counseling Theory

My theoretical perspective in counseling is Adlerian Therapy, which views problems as goal-oriented and purposeful. This approach focuses on understanding motivations and what purpose problems may serve in order to meet goals in healthier ways and overcome problems. Events occurring in one’s past are explored in terms of the impact to us in the present. In addition to Adlerian Therapy, I utilize Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques.

My Experience

I began my love for helping others at a Shelter for Abused & Neglected Children, followed by work in the mental health field treating children & families in a Therapeutic Day Treatment/Partial Hospitalization. I have experience providing outpatient therapy to clients of all ages in outpatient private practice. In addition, I have taught undergraduate Abnormal Psychology and Developmental Psychology courses at a private health sciences college.

Credentials & Education

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia and North Carolina. I earned a Master of Science in Counselor Education, with a Focus in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Arkansas in 2010 and I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Family & Child Development at Texas State University in 2005.

I Work With Individuals & Couples

Individual Therapy

Individual counseling (sometimes called psychotherapy, talk therapy, or treatment) is a process through which clients work one-on-one with a trained mental health clinician in a safe, caring, and confidential environment.

The advantages of Individual counseling are: It helps you have a better understanding of your own self and your emotions. It helps you discover your personal strengths and weakness.

Couples Therapy

Marriage counseling typically brings couples or partners together for joint therapy sessions to learn skills to solidify your relationship, such as open communication or problem-solving.

A couples counselor can provide “neutral territory” to help couples agree upon and work through tough issues with support. Couples can decide to rebuild their marriage and make a renewed commitment or clarify the reasons why they need to separate or end the marriage.
